SAYREVILLE
In 1876, the New Jersey State Legislature established the Township of Sayreville. In May of 1919, the citizens voted to become a borough, and that government was established on January 1, 1920.
LIBRARY
The Free Public Library Association of Sayreville was founded by local citizens in 1931. The library was located in a building on Main Street before moving into Borough Hall in 1958. On January 1, 1960, the Sayreville Free Public Library was established as a municipal library. The existing library building opened on August 1, 1971.
